Rhinohide Studios The Art of Glen Ostrander

"A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing."

-William Dobell

Born on October 20th, 1973, and raised among the vast suburban landscape of Columbus, Ohio, Glen showed a great interest in picture making and storytelling at a very early age. From the time he was able to grasp a crayon, he began to give life to strange and interesting creatures. Fueled by a never-ending stream of 70's and 80's popular culture in the form of horror and science fiction movies as well as copious amounts of comic books, Glen decided in his teenage years that his heart lay fully in becoming an illustrator.

In the fall of 1992, Glen enrolled at the Columbus College of Art and Design and, during his studies, further honed his skills in illustration and visual communication. He submitted his portfolio to long time hero and comic book legend, Berni Wrightson, for review, at which Mr. Wrightson proclaimed:

"Glen's work is very well thought out and excellently executed. His drawing is clear and honest and presented in interesting and engaging compositions. His work is not trendy or gimmicky, but classical and timeless."

Glen took those words to heart and continued to focus his studies on that timeless style he had created for himself. In the spring of 1997, Glen earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

In the 13 years since his graduation from college, Glen has taken on a great number of product and graphic design jobs as well as innumerable freelance commissions from musical groups, game companies and private collectors. He currently resides in Massachusetts with his wife and children where he works, hand painting various toys for concept, licensing approval, and commercial purposes. Glen's passion for art continues to thrive as he works toward the ultimate goal of becoming a full time freelance illustrator.
